It’s an interesting question. And one being asked with increasing frequency these days. Is social gaming a veritable loop hole for online gambling?
Every industry across the board is looking for ways in which they can increase their revenues via online and mobile. Within the casino and gambling industry, the debate around regulated online gambling is a hot topic for many land-based casinos and gaming tech firms. However, many casinos and gaming companies are thinking outside of the box and finding more ways to leverage social gaming as a source of revenue for traditional casino games.
While social games prohibit real-money gambling (and allow players to play for free) there are a multitude of ways in which social games can, in fact, be monetized.

In 1996, IGT launched their live Wheel of Fortune slot machine. The game was met with great success, and over the years has led to many new and improved features—the latest being the launch of Wheel of Fortune Triple Extreme Spin.
The latest gaming experience offers what the company calls exciting new bonuses, and an innovative scatter symbol design that allows for three simultaneous spins at once during the Mini Wheel Bonus.
If that is not enough, the slot machine also allows players to go from playing on a live slot machine on the casino floor, right to playing online on their desktop or mobile device.

Social gaming is still a fairly new industry, but it is a multi-billion-dollar global industry, nonetheless.
While many social games are inspired by classic board games and casino games, a number of others are new games created primarily for mobile devices.
Although most who enter the world of social gaming are either new to the industry, or long time online gaming firms, MyVegas developer Playstudios has found a way to leverage social casino gaming by partnering with land-based Las Vegas casinos.

On Monday, the 2014 Mobile and Tablet Gambling Summit (MTGS) kicks off in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
The two-day event gives online operators and land-based casino owners an opportunity to connect with online and mobile gaming industry titans and address the major market opportunities and challenges inherent in the mobile era of casino gaming.
“Mobile gambling is the biggest opportunity for operators and casino’s to drive profit in the coming years,” the event’s organizers say. “But the mobile roll-out is hampered by technical problems in the strictly regulated geolocation programs. Disjointed registration and authentication processes hinder the opportunity to use mobile as a brand acquisition and engagement tool, while resistance from banks and credit card issuers to honor online gambling transactions is also controversial.”

Many states are still weighing the pros and cons of legalizing online gambling, the state of New York is one of them. With nearby New Jersey having already legalized online gambling, many New Yorkers wish they had the same privileges as their Garden State neighbors.
It is estimated that residents of the state of New York already spend around $110 million per year in illegal online poker. If illegal gaming is transferred to legal gaming, it could generate an additional $50 million or more each year in gambling tax revenue (and this number does not include tax revenue generated by new online gamblers).
Not surprisingly, the big boys of the gambling world are now in an Empire State of mind.

The Gambling Licensing and Advertising Act was set to commence in the UK on October 1st, but the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has had to delay legislation due to an accusation from the Gibraltar Betting and Gaming Commission (GBGC).
Gibraltar is challenging the UKGC, claiming that the new legislation is not being put in place for consumer protection but only as a way to generate additional revenue.
On top of the initial £19,500 online casinos must pay for their new license, they must also pay an annual fee of £118,000. In addition, they will be subject to a 15% Point of Consumption tax.
