While it’s no secret that some of the world’s foremost gaming and hospitality companies have embraced mobile technology to some degree, marketers would like to see a much warmer embrace in the coming years.
With the advent of wearables, IoT, and smartphone penetration heading for 80%, mobile devices are now the most efficient channel to reach gamers. But it’s still a dreadfully underutilized channel, says independent marketing analyst Ian Hayes.
“We need to reach a point where every casino experience and convenience is somehow capable of being facilitated through an app or SMS,” Hayes says.

The gaming industry’s biggest marketers have apparently been remarkably prudent with their use of SMS and other mobile marketing tactics in 2013.
Whether this reticence is due to concerns over compliance issues or simply a general reluctance to more aggressively bring their marketing into the digital age, most casino regulars simply aren’t complaining about too many promotional SMS messages.
This revelation is just one tidbit coming to light this week amidst a flood of news regarding the explosion of mobile marketing and, regrettably, SMS spam across the U.S.

Here are some of the top stories in mobile and online gaming that we’ve been monitoring in recent days.
With all the unavoidable chatter and corresponding buzz surrounding online gambling’s legalization in New Jersey, it’s hard to imagine anyone not familiar with this monumental development, let alone residents of New Jersey. But, apparently, a large number of New Jersey residents – we’re talking close to half – are oblivious to the looming arrival of iGaming in the Garden State.
Las Vegas has never been a town known for being meek and mild. But when it comes to Sin City’s embrace of mobile marketing – and, in particular, SMS marketing – some say that the biggest players in the casino and gaming industries are still far too conservative with their SMS strategies. While SMS success stories abound, there could – and should – be more of them. And with time, experts say, there will be. But the casinos, hotels, and resorts in Las Vegas need to step up their efforts.

As of early 2013, SMS was already well entrenched in the marketing mentality of casinos based everywhere from Las Vegas to China.
But the full potential of SMS (along with email and social media marketing) in the gaming industry isn’t close to being realized.
While close to 90% of gaming companies regularly turn to SMS to hit patrons and gamers with welcome messages and other communications that encourage gameplay and additional interaction, only a fraction of these companies (an estimated 10% overall) are using mobile messaging for time-sensitive promotions.

Nowhere is the evolution and fusion of mobile and marketing more apparent than in the gaming industry today. And perhaps nowhere is the help of mobile more sorely needed.
To that end, the team at Up All Day Creative Solutions is helping its clients gain a competitive mobile edge in their marketing.
And so far, the results have been nothing less than remarkable.
All told, those who have opted to go mobile in their marketing strategies are now among the biggest cheerleaders for why it is truly imperative for companies in the hospitality and gaming industries to intelligently reach customers who are constantly on the move and too frequently bombarded with irrelevant offers and annoying promotions – most of which aren’t even optimized for the mobile screen.

Jared Reitzin, CEO of mobileStorm, is profiled in the new issue of Global Gaming Business.
Delving into the topic of email marketing as a potentially more formidable and effective marketing resource than traditional direct mail marketing, Reitzin shared his views and insight with GGB Publisher Roger Gros in September at G2E in Las Vegas.
The impact of direct mail was undeniable during the formative years of the gaming industry. When an attractive package arrived at the doors of their customers, casinos were able to make offers that would lure players to the casino.
Reitzin explained to Gros that mobileStorm has developed an email direct marketing campaign “that has become much more effective with the advent of smartphones and mobile devices.”
