Interior design is undergoing a dramatic transformation right now. Americans are fundamentally changing how they approach their living spaces, embracing practical innovations that make daily life more comfortable, sustainable, and deeply personal. These aren’t fleeting trends or flashy gadgets, but thoughtful solutions addressing real household challenges.

What’s driving this shift is the convergence of artificial intelligence with traditional design principles. Homeowners are discovering that technology can enhance rather than complicate their living environments. This movement toward smarter, more responsive homes represents a genuine evolution in how we think about interior spaces.

AI Transforms Interior Planning

AI in interior design goes far beyond pretty room renderings. It’s becoming the backbone of how Americans plan their living spaces, offering personalized recommendations based on individual lifestyle patterns and preferences. These systems analyze everything from natural light patterns to traffic flow, creating tailored solutions for each unique home.

Planner 5D has transformed home design by enabling users to visualize complete room transformations through voice commands and touch interactions. The platform’s integration with Apple Intelligence brings professional-quality design capabilities to anyone with a smartphone, making sophisticated planning accessible to regular homeowners without requiring design expertise. This shift moves what was once exclusive to design professionals into the hands of everyday users who want to reimagine their living spaces. The combination of AI-powered functionality and intuitive controls creates a bridge between complex design software and user-friendly home planning tools that ordinary homeowners can navigate with confidence.

The real breakthrough lies in how AI eliminates traditional design guesswork. Where homeowners once struggled with furniture arrangements and color combinations, these platforms provide accurate visualizations before any purchases happen. Users photograph their existing spaces, experiment with different layouts, and see realistic results instantly.

Modern AI tools excel at learning individual preferences over time. Each interaction teaches the system more about personal style choices, family needs, and functional requirements. This creates increasingly refined suggestions that feel genuinely personalized rather than generic.

Mobile applications have transformed design planning from formal consultations into casual exploration. People capture inspiration from social media or magazines, then experiment with incorporating those elements into their actual homes. This democratization has accelerated adoption of contemporary styles and sustainable practices across diverse demographics.

Social sharing features within these platforms create active communities where homeowners exchange ideas, provide feedback, and showcase completed projects. This peer-to-peer learning supplements AI recommendations with real-world experiences and practical solutions from other users facing similar challenges.

Smart Bathroom Technology Leads Innovation

Smart toilets have emerged as the most sought-after interior upgrade in American homes. This surge reflects broader shifts toward wellness-focused features that combine health benefits with everyday comfort. These aren’t luxury items anymore—they’re practical investments in family health and environmental responsibility.

Giving Tree Home dominates this category with fixtures incorporating advanced AI capabilities. Their T2005 model, priced at $1,099.99, delivers features typically found in models costing twice as much, including heated seating, bidet washing, air drying, and automatic deodorization systems.

Self-cleaning cycles powered by water conservation algorithms represent significant technological advancement. These systems analyze usage patterns to optimize cleaning schedules while minimizing water consumption. Some models include health monitoring capabilities that track wellness metrics over time, providing valuable insights for family health management.

The environmental benefits extend beyond water savings. Modern smart toilets eliminate toilet paper needs through customizable bidet functions and air-drying systems. Many include built-in air purification and UV sterilization, creating healthier bathroom environments while reducing household waste.

Installation has become surprisingly straightforward. Current models retrofit existing plumbing with minimal modifications. Professional installation typically requires only basic electrical connections, making upgrades accessible to most homeowners. Long-term savings on utilities and paper products often offset initial investment costs within several years.

What makes smart toilets particularly appealing is their individual customization. Unlike shared smart home systems requiring family consensus, these fixtures maintain separate user profiles with personalized settings for temperature, pressure, drying preferences, and ambient lighting options.

Modern Aesthetics Embrace Hidden Technology

Today’s modern interior design seamlessly integrates advanced technology while maintaining clean lines and uncluttered visual spaces. This approach represents a mature understanding of how digital innovation can enhance rather than dominate living environments. The focus has shifted toward invisible integration rather than showcase gadgetry.

Hidden speakers embedded within walls, invisible lighting systems, and smart glass create sophisticated environments where technology works behind the scenes. These installations provide all the benefits of connected homes without cluttering surfaces or compromising aesthetic integrity.

Contemporary approaches emphasize experiences over objects. Perfectly calibrated lighting adapts throughout the day following circadian rhythms. Climate systems maintain optimal comfort without visible controls. Entertainment systems respond to voice commands without requiring remote controls or visible equipment.

Integration challenges have largely been solved through wireless technology advances and component miniaturization. Speakers disappear into architectural elements. Lighting controls operate through smartphone applications. Climate management learns individual preferences automatically, adjusting temperature and humidity without manual intervention.

Modern minimalism now focuses on purposeful design where every element serves multiple functions. Technology enhances rather than complicates daily routines. This practical minimalism differs significantly from earlier stark approaches that prioritized visual emptiness over functional efficiency.

Modular furniture systems reconfigure for different activities throughout the day. Built-in storage solutions eliminate need for separate cabinets or shelving units. Precision lighting provides targeted task illumination and ambient mood control without visible fixtures disrupting clean ceiling lines.

Color palettes have evolved beyond sterile whites toward warm neutrals, natural wood tones, and carefully selected accent colors. This softer approach creates welcoming environments while maintaining the fundamental clean lines and uncluttered surfaces that define contemporary minimalist aesthetics.

Sustainable Innovation Gains Momentum

Sustainable interior design represents one of the fastest-growing segments in home improvement, driven largely by AI tools that make eco-friendly choices more accessible to mainstream consumers. The integration of sustainability with smart technology creates compelling value propositions for environmentally conscious homeowners.

Modern AI design platforms actively promote sustainable options by highlighting energy-efficient layouts, recommending eco-friendly materials, and calculating long-term environmental impacts. This data-driven approach helps users understand practical benefits that extend beyond environmental considerations to include health improvements and cost savings.

Bio-based materials are entering mainstream design vocabulary. Algae fabric, mushroom leather, and mycelium panels offer unique textures and colors while dramatically reducing environmental impact compared to traditional alternatives. These innovations provide aesthetic variety previously unavailable in sustainable materials.

Smart home systems contribute significantly through energy optimization, water conservation, and waste reduction. Automated lighting adjusts based on occupancy and natural light levels. Climate control systems learn household patterns to minimize energy consumption. Water monitoring detects leaks before they cause damage or waste.

The most successful sustainable approaches focus on longevity rather than trend-following. AI tools help users select classic designs and high-quality materials that remain functional and attractive for decades. This long-term perspective aligns environmental goals with economic considerations, making sustainability financially practical.

Water conservation has become particularly significant in bathroom and kitchen design. Smart fixtures monitor usage patterns and provide real-time consumption feedback. Advanced systems detect unusual flow patterns that might indicate leaks, alerting homeowners before problems escalate into expensive repairs or environmental waste.

AI Design Tools Democratize Professional Planning

AI-powered design tools are solving common problems that have frustrated homeowners for generations. Room layout optimization, color coordination, and furniture selection become straightforward when artificial intelligence processes vast databases of successful designs and individual user preferences. These platforms eliminate the guesswork that traditionally made interior design intimidating for non-professionals.

The educational aspect may represent these tools’ most valuable contribution. Users learn fundamental design principles through hands-on experimentation rather than theoretical study. They immediately see how different choices affect overall room aesthetics and functionality, building confidence for making independent design decisions.

Integration with e-commerce platforms allows seamless purchasing of recommended items directly through design applications. This connection between planning and purchasing removes friction that often prevents people from acting on design ideas. Many platforms provide real-time price comparisons and availability information, streamlining the entire process from concept to completion.

Advanced tools now incorporate LiDAR technology and computer vision algorithms to understand spaces through precise measurement and recognition systems. This eliminates manual measurement requirements and ensures accurate spatial planning before any physical changes begin.

The relationship between AI and professional designers remains complementary rather than competitive. These tools enhance human creativity by handling routine calculations and generating multiple options quickly, allowing designers to focus on higher-level creative decisions and client relationships.

Professional designers increasingly use AI for client communication improvements. Meeting recordings generate immediate transcripts and focused reports that can be shared moments after conversations end, eliminating confusion about project details and ensuring clear understanding of agreed-upon specifications.

]]>

When was the last time you actually looked at your soap? I mean really looked at it, considering its form, texture, and the experience it creates? Most of us grab whatever rectangular or oval blob sits in the supermarket aisle, use it until it’s a slippery, sad remnant, and repeat. The humble bar of soap has remained virtually unchanged for centuries, a victim of our collective design indifference. Most soaps are shaped like either pebbles or rectangles, and very rarely do you see them in novelty forms (remember that tetrapod-shaped soap from 2018?), but genuine innovation in this space is rarer than a clean bathroom at a music festival. That’s why Microbi Design’s new Coral Soaps collection stopped me mid-scroll and forced me to reconsider everything I thought I knew about this everyday object. Created by scientific designer Laura Maria Gonzalez, these soaps transform a mundane hygiene product into a tactile experience that marries computational design with biological inspiration.

Gonzalez’s Coral Soaps collection shatters the mundane paradigm with forms that could easily be mistaken for specimens in a marine biologist’s laboratory rather than something you’d lather up with. Available in vibrant pinks, soft yellows, and mint greens, these aren’t soaps so much as they are handheld sculptures, each bearing intricate ridges and valleys that mimic the elaborate structures of coral reefs. The collection features three distinct patterns, each inspired by specific coral species like Leptoria, Platygyra, and Agaricia. These aren’t arbitrary aesthetic choices; they’re direct translations of nature’s own problem-solving designs, applied to an object we interact with multiple times daily. The result transforms a forgettable bathroom staple into a tactile artpiece that your eyes, nose, and skin will simultaneously love.

Designer: Microbi Design (Laura Maria Gonzalez)

What makes these soaps revolutionary lies in their creation process. Unlike conventional soap design, which typically involves simple molding techniques, Microbi Design employs computational algorithms that digitally “grow” these forms. The design team uses parametric modeling software to simulate natural growth patterns, allowing the soap’s structure to develop according to mathematical rules similar to those governing actual coral formation. This generative approach means each ridge and furrow serves both aesthetic and functional purposes. The soap’s deep texture increases surface area for better lathering, while the ridges provide gentle exfoliation against skin. Water channels formed by the pattern help the soap drain efficiently, eliminating that gooey mess your average soap becomes if it just sits languishing in its soapwater.

The complementary soap dish looks just as otherworldly. Its latticed, organic structure resembles a cross-section of bone or coral skeleton, featuring an intricate network of openings. Created using similar generative design principles, the dish allows air circulation from all angles, helping the soap dry completely between uses. The dish’s parametrically optimized form strikes a perfect balance between structural integrity and negative space. This isn’t merely a soap holder; it’s an engineering solution disguised as bathroom decor, solving the age-old problem of soggy soap while maintaining visual harmony with the soap itself.

The implications extend far beyond your bathroom sink. Microbi Design’s approach demonstrates how computational design tools can transform even the most overlooked everyday objects. By applying complex algorithms to simple products, designers can optimize both form and function simultaneously, creating objects that work better while looking extraordinary (these generatively designed cups are yet another example). The Coral Soaps collection proves that when designers challenge assumptions about familiar objects, the results can be transformative. Available in three colors (pink, yellow-orange, and mint green) and priced at $24 for a soap and dish set, these soaps represent a future where even the most mundane items in our lives aren’t taken for granted.

Hand-chiseled Marble Washbasin looks so stunning you’ll think it was CNC Machined

]]>

What Kreoo is doing is the antithesis of industrialism. Instead of making things easier using machines, the company is taking a 180° and going back to the basics. Marble as a material has been a symbol of the elite for millennia (marble quarries can be found to date back as early as the 7th century BC), and for the most part of its existence, it’s been manipulated by tools held by expertly guided hands.

Over the past century, however, marble’s become more democratic. Machines ‘harvest’ marble from the earth, carry them to factories, where other specialist machines carve out the shapes in a matter of hours. A process that once took months (if not years) now can be procured for a couple of hundred bucks on some atelier website. What Kreoo attempts at doing is reclaiming marble’s rank in the echelon of greats. And it does so, not by using the ‘highest quality marble’ from the most sought-after quarry in Italy… but instead, by returning to tradition in a way that commands respect, just because of the weeks and months of expertise and literal sweat that goes into building each washbasin.

Designer: Christophe Pillet for Kreoo

The washbasin’s design looks fairly unassuming if you analyze just the silhouette, but hit the dramadic lighting and you see the staggering detail that makes it so noteworthy. Inspired by the grid-shaped patterns found on the inside of the Pantheon’s dome, the Dawn Freestanding Washbasin employs a similar soft ornamental grid that wraps seamlessly along the side of the basin. Except it doesn’t end there – step closer and you see that the pattern has its own micro-detailing, designed to look like the washbasin was carved by a computer-controlled drill or a CNC machine.

I can’t begin to imagine the hours that must have gone into individually carve all those grooves to sheer perfection, mimicking machines rather than having the machines mimic humans. The texture’s left unpolished, while the basin is capped with two polished blocks – on the top and on the bottom – that complete it. Although not shown in these images, the washbasin comes in 4 marble variants – Bianco del Re, Bianco Perla, Bianco Carrara, and a gorgeous dark Nero Marquina.

The entire basin stands at an impressive 35.5 inches tall, and weighs 157 kilograms or 346 lb. Pricing hasn’t been mentioned on Kreoo’s website, but don’t expect the Dawn to be even remotely affordable. This thing was literally made for a different class of people – the equivalent of the kind who would commission marble sculptures for their houses in ancient Greece and Rome…

That moment when you discover a nail clipper or file that feels satisfyingly weighty, moves with crisp precision, and looks almost sculptural sitting on your countertop? It is a quiet thrill, a little upgrade that fits seamlessly into your daily rhythm.

This round-up is for those who appreciate the intersection of form and function, where a grooming essential can be both a tactile pleasure and a visual delight. Why Nail Care Matters

Taking care of your nails is about much more than appearance. Well-groomed nails help you feel comfortable and self-assured, whether you are reaching for a handshake or typing at your desk. Neat, healthy nails reflect personal care and a sense of attention to detail.

Beyond how they look, keeping your nails trimmed and shaped is important for hygiene and physical comfort. Regular care helps prevent painful snags, reduces the risk of infection, and keeps your hands and feet feeling their best. Making nail care a small, mindful ritual can leave you feeling refreshed and ready for whatever the day brings.

How to Choose the Right Nail Clippers and Files

Choosing the right tool can turn a routine trim into a genuinely pleasant experience. Start by thinking about your lifestyle and what you need most. What is the best type of nail clipper for thick nails?

Thick nails are best trimmed with a sturdy, sharp clipper designed for toenails or heavy-duty use. Look for clippers with a wide jaw and strong leverage, such as the Rotating Nail Clipper or a dedicated toenail clipper, to ensure a clean, effortless cut.

There was a time when shaving was just another chore. One more thing to rush through, dodging nicks and plastic waste, grabbing whatever drugstore razor was on sale. No ritual. No satisfaction. Just the low hum of “good enough.”

But as more of us rethink our routines this year—decluttering our spaces, upgrading what we use daily, and trading disposables for things that last—the Auger PrecisionFlex Razor quietly changes everything. Not as a flex or a status symbol, but as the tool that finally made me rethink what “essential” really means.

How a Single Razor Took Over My Routine

At first glance, the PrecisionFlex felt like another “premium” grooming gadget. Sleek, all-black, a little mysterious next to the usual clutter. But over time? It didn’t just join my routine. It took it over.

It made me clear out the old cartridge razor, the so-called travel shaver, even the electric trimmer that mostly collected dust. Why? Because I realized I’d finally found a razor that made me want to actually enjoy the process.

It’s the difference between dreading a rushed, forgettable shave and actually looking forward to the small moment of focus at the start (or end) of your day.

Form Meets Functionality: 5 Reasons It’s a Keeper

  • World-First 30° Adjustable Head: No more awkward wrist angles or missed spots under the jaw. The head adapts to my face, not the other way around.
  • Industry’s Widest Pivot Range: The 3D suspension glides over every contour. Fewer passes. Less irritation. More confidence.
  • Japanese 5-Blade System: The closest, smoothest shave I’ve ever had. No tug, no burn, no guilt from another plastic handle.
  • Hygienic Anti-Contact Storage: No more blades gunked up or dulled by the sink. The head stays dry, clean, and ready.
  • Minimalist, Sculpted Grip: It actually feels good in the hand. Balanced, substantial, and nothing extra. Just the essentials, done right.

Why “Premium” Might Finally Mean “Permanent”

We live in a world that’s constantly selling us upgrades, subscriptions, and “just good enough.” But after a few weeks with the PrecisionFlex, those old razors felt obsolete. Not because this one is flashy, but because it’s the first razor I’ve trusted to do the job, day after day, without fuss or filler.

It’s not about luxury for luxury’s sake. It’s about finally having something in your daily routine that’s built to last and worth keeping.

And yes—it’s made in Japan, by Kai Corporation, the blade experts behind some of the sharpest tools in the world. That heritage shows in every detail.

Design That Reflects Discipline

This isn’t a razor that begs for attention. It sits quietly by the sink, all-black, sculpted, and self-assured. No branding. No chrome. Just presence. The kind of object that feels like it belongs in a Muji catalog or a Kyoto design museum.

Its form doesn’t shout “luxury”—but it radiates control, precision, and intent. You don’t just use it. You notice it. And over time, it becomes a visual anchor for your space, and a tactile one for your routine.

Who It’s For

  • Design Enthusiasts
A tool that looks as good as it works.
  • Minimalists
One razor, every need. No clutter. No landfill guilt.
  • Ritual Seekers
For anyone who wants a few minutes of clarity, not just another task.
  • Legacy Builders
The kind of tool you keep, use, and maybe even pass on.

The Quiet Power of a Better Routine

You don’t realize how much of your “routine” is just habit until one object shifts everything. The PrecisionFlex won’t solve all your problems. But it turned a daily chore into a small, reliable pleasure. And in a world full of noise, sometimes that’s all you really need.

At the end of the day, it’s still a razor. But sometimes, the right tool changes everything. The Auger PrecisionFlex Razor is available now for $45.

When I was a child, of course, Barbie was one of my first playmates. I always dreamt about having the dreamhouse and other sets, but all my parents could give me at that time were just the regular ones without much accessories. I told myself then that when I grew up and had my own money, i would actually live in my own Barbie Dreamhouse, not the toy version but an actual house that was predominantly pink. Well of course, that didn’t happen since my color preference and tastes changed but if you’re the type who still would like to live in a Barbie-inspired house, then now is your chance.

In a bold and creative partnership, Barbie™ has joined forces with HEWI, a German design company renowned for its innovative and accessible sanitary and hardware solutions. The result is the Barbie x HEWI collection, a unique product line that blends timeless Bauhaus principles with Barbie’s iconic aesthetic to reimagine the possibilities for modern interiors. The latter is known for high-quality, inclusive, and universal design solutions and so we get a fitting collaboration for the sanitary and hardware sector.

Designer: HEWI

The Barbie x HEWI collection integrates the playful, bold, and instantly recognizable elements of Barbie’s branding, specifically pink and stylish, with HEWI’s expertise in functional, accessible design. The products are crafted to be both visually striking and highly usable, making them suitable for a wide range of spaces, from homes and hotels to public buildings. This includes having items with clean lines and geometric forms so they remain timeless and versatile. And since HEWI is about accessibility, the collection is intended for anyone, regardless of age and ability.

It doesn’t seem like this collection is something that you can simply purchase off the shelf at a typical retail store. Instead, if you’re interested in acquiring pieces from the Barbie x HEWI collection, you will need to consult directly with HEWI, as indicated on their official website. This approach suggests a more curated and possibly customizable process, likely tailored to individual client needs or specific project requirements. Currently, the collection’s showcase focuses primarily on bathroom and bedroom elements, highlighting HEWI’s expertise in these areas. Featured items include a modern shower, a stylish toilet cleaner, innovative clothes racks, a chic toilet paper holder, a functional yet elegant bathroom stool, and even all of the bathroom tiles themselves, each designed with the collection’s signature blend of playful Barbie aesthetics and timeless Bauhaus-inspired lines.

This curated selection demonstrates the collection’s versatility and its ability to transform everyday spaces into vibrant, thoughtfully-designed environments.By merging Barbie’s cultural influence with HEWI’s commitment to universal design, this collection challenges conventional ideas about what interior accessories can be. It proves that practical solutions do not have to sacrifice style or personality but can instead be put together.

I live in a country where more often than not, the towel dries even before we leave the bathroom (since it’s just too hot most of the time). So towel-drying wall radiators are not that common in most households. In fact, it was just a few years ago when I encountered one when I was traveling outside the country and I didn’t even know what it was. I thought it was just some tubing where I could hang my towel or clothes while taking a bath. Most of them look similar though, using multiple tubings for its basic design.

The Zehnder Archibald towel drying radiator, designed by Leo Salzedo, stands as a testament to the fusion of art and functionality in modern bathroom design. Its unique construction from a single curved steel tube not only offers a sleek aesthetic but also ensures efficient towel warming. Unlike traditional towel radiators composed of multiple joined tubes, the Archibald’s seamless design provides a minimalist yet striking presence in any bathroom. Its sinuous form, reminiscent of a sculptural piece, allows it to hold up to four towels simultaneously, ensuring they are warm and dry when needed.

Designer: Leo Salzedo for Zhender

Instead of just looking like a functional piece of furniture in your bathroom or bedroom, you have something that looks more like aesthetic hangers while still maintaining an industrial feel. You do have the option to change the finish to match diverse interior styles, in case the industrial thing is not what you’re going for. The finishes include chrome and other powder-coated colors. They’re also available in both electric and hydronic (central heating) models, catering to various installation preferences. The electric version operates at 200 watts, while the hydronic model offers a heat output of approximately 233 watts (795 BTU), making it suitable for maintaining a comfortable bathroom climate.

While I may not have much use for a towel radiator in my own home—where the climate does most of the drying for me, the Zehnder Archibald made me pause and appreciate how even the most utilitarian objects can be reimagined as sculptural statements. It’s a reminder that great design isn’t just about necessity; it’s about intention, experience, and even a touch of surprise. For those who live in colder climates, or simply value the feeling of a warm towel after a shower, the Archibald offers not just warmth, but beauty. It’s proof that functional objects don’t have to fade into the background—they can, in fact, be the centerpiece.

When I go to a bathroom outside my home, I probably don’t remember what the sink looks like. What I’ll remember is whether or not the faucet was working especially if I really needed water at that time. But every once in a while, a design would capture my attention especially if it has an intentional aesthetic. And even though it’s in a bathroom, I will probably take a picture of it especially if the design is really interesting.

This sink design is one of those that would be really unforgettable if seen in the real world. Aeloria is a sink that transcends its utilitarian purpose to become a captivating sculpture. Conceived by D Jone Daniel Derickson, this is not merely a basin; it’s a testament to the quiet power of nature, meticulously crafted to evoke the slow, deliberate artistry of wind and water. Inspired by the gentle cascade of a waterfall, Aeloria captures a fleeting moment of natural motion, freezing it in an elegant, layered form.

Designer: D Jone Daniel Derickson

The sink’s design thoughtfully mirrors the stepped, gravitational descent of water found in wild waterfalls. Just as in nature, water in this sink finds the path of least resistance, gracefully flowing downwards in a series of tiers, each shaped by subtle changes in elevation. These contours aren’t just aesthetically pleasing; they resonate with a sense of familiarity, reminding one of tranquil forest hikes and the rugged beauty of rocky shorelines.

Aeloria is envisioned as a centerpiece for spacious resort settings, where its scale contributes to an atmosphere of unadulterated luxury. More than a functional element, this sink becomes an integral part of the ambiance, a focal point that draws the eye and invites contemplation. The choice of speckled stone further enhances this connection to the natural world, its texture and coloration reminiscent of mineral-rich riverbeds. This material not only exudes a sense of organic authenticity but also encourages a tactile engagement, inviting a pause to connect with the Earth’s ancient rhythms.

This sculptural sink is design that truly flows – not just visually, mimicking the movement of water, but also emotionally, stirring a sense of tranquility and connection to nature. Aeloria is an elemental masterpiece, a harmonious blend of form and function that elevates the simple act of washing one’s hands into an experience. It’s a reminder of nature’s patient artistry and a luxurious addition that promises to bring a touch of the wild’s quiet beauty to any grand space.

World’s First ‘Splashless’ Urinal keeps the Floor Clean and your Pants Pee-free

Somewhere between building nuclear fusion reactors and decoding the human genome, humanity paused… and decided that peeing shouldn’t be a messy ordeal. Enter the Nautilus urinal: a piece of plumbing so thoughtfully engineered that it makes the 100-year-old standard look like a cruel prank played on pants and public floors everywhere.

Scientists at the University of Waterloo – yes, fittingly named – approached the urinal problem with the same earnest precision usually reserved for spacecrafts and particle accelerators. They didn’t just eyeball it. They fired a dyed-water jet through a urethra-mimicking nozzle onto test surfaces angled meticulously between 0 and 90 degrees. What they found would make even Newton nod approvingly: angles over 30 degrees are splash factories. Anything shallower drastically tames the wild energy of a stream. That led them to craft the Nautilus, a urinal that captures and channels urine like a fluid dynamics masterpiece, reducing splashback by a staggering 98%.

Designers: Kaveeshan Thurairajah, Xianyu (Mabel) Song, J D Zhu, Mia Shi, Ethan A Barlow, Randy C Hurd, Zhao Pan (University of Waterloo)

Visually, it’s a sleek swirl of ceramic engineering, a tighter, more inviting spiral that looks more like a modernist sculpture than a bathroom fixture. Unlike the brutish slanted walls of traditional urinals, the Nautilus hugs the stream, guiding it along a smooth, gentle curve with the elegance of a Formula 1 racetrack designed purely for liquids. And while there’s a brutalist Cornucopia prototype that looks like it came from Elon Musk’s fever dream, the Nautilus is the undisputed champion, working for users of almost any height, which is kind of a miracle when you realize how unregulated the chaos of public restroom aim usually is.

And this wasn’t just an aesthetic choice. The Nautilus was torture-tested with poor aim scenarios, erratic flow rates, and simulated misfires. Yet, it consistently captured everything with a grace that makes you wonder why we tolerated Jackson Pollock floors for so long. The data is even more satisfying: switching North America over to Nautilus-style urinals could save up to 10 million liters (2.6 million gallons) of water per day. That’s not small change when cities are scraping the barrel for every drop.

It’s easy to romanticize grand challenges – curing cancer, saving the planet – but life is a patchwork quilt stitched from a thousand tiny annoyances. Pee splash isn’t glamorous, but it’s real. It’s the kind of everyday indignity that quietly erodes dignity and comfort without anyone noticing until suddenly, they’re standing in it.

That’s the magic of design thinking at its best: no problem too petty, no dignity too small to preserve. And the payoff is tangible. Imagine cleaner public bathrooms, lower maintenance costs, fewer eco-unfriendly cleaning products being dumped down the drain. Suddenly, a small tweak in geometry feels like it shifts the axis of civilization a few degrees toward better.

Maybe the real sign of a society leveling up isn’t flying cars or robot butlers. Maybe it’s how little urine ends up where it shouldn’t be.

Travelers know the frustration: your bag is neatly packed with essentials, but then—there it is—a bulky, awkward toothbrush taking up precious space. Or worse, a so-called portable toothbrush that feels like a cheap toy. For Upplang, this frustration sparked a revolution. Co-founders Tingrui and Webber had one goal: to create a toothbrush that didn’t force you to choose between performance and portability. That’s how Upplang was born. A sleek, powerful travel companion for people who value both style and substance.

Forget plastic cases and flimsy chargers. Upplang’s electric toothbrush combines premium materials, like aluminum alloy and eco-friendly composites, for durability and elegance. It’s not bulky, either; its compact, elliptical design slides into your carry-on or backpack like it belongs there. Forget the plastic cases and awkward chargers. This toothbrush travels with you seamlessly, as if it was designed with jet-setting in mind. Oh wait, it was.

Upplang didn’t start in a lab or on a corporate whiteboard. It started in real-life moments—like TingRui’s travels to more than 30 countries. The realization hit hard: most travel toothbrushes just don’t cut it. Weak vibrations, flimsy construction, and no sense of care in their design made oral hygiene on the road feel like a compromise. Enter Webber, a designer with awards to spare, who brought an obsessive focus to blending function and form. Together, they reimagined what a toothbrush could look and feel like—and yes, how it could actually work.

The case is a gorgeous metallic number, slick enough to fit into any bag but robust enough to withstand being run over by a car. Inside lies the brush, along with a built-in prop-stand to keep it on your bathroom counter during your work trip, or suction to wall-mount it while at home. The brush itself is thoughtfully created – an elliptical cross-section on the handle that’s a pleasure to grip, bristles designed to work with all types of teeth, and textured rubber bristles on the backside to scrub the inside of your cheek, giving you all-round oral hygiene.

Powered by a 14mm motor delivering 42,000 RPM, Upplang rivals top-tier electric toothbrushes designed for home use. Gentle yet effective, it’s engineered for superior cleaning—fast. When you’re done, toss it back into your bag without a second thought. USB-C charging makes powering up simple—no proprietary chargers or ecosystem gimmicks. Just thoughtful, user-friendly design.

It’s one thing to make a good toothbrush. It’s another to earn nods from design elites. The Upplang toothbrush boasts an impressive roster of awards: the German Red Dot, Italian A’ Design Award, and the Good Design Award, among others. These accolades are more than shiny trophies; they’re proof that Upplang is paying attention to what matters—craftsmanship, usability, and a design that feels as good as it looks. You might not expect your toothbrush to win awards, but then again, you might not have met this one yet.

Upplang’s impact doesn’t stop at transforming travel-friendly oral care—it extends far beyond. Through its “One Smile, Four Impact” campaign, each toothbrush purchased helps deliver four eco-friendly brushes to underserved communities, advancing oral health where it’s needed most. Add to that a commitment to sustainable materials and a growing movement of users sharing their stories through #JoinUpplang, and you’ve got a brand that’s turning smiles into meaningful change—one thoughtful brush at a time.
