Online Poker Picks Up Steam Thanks to Clever Marketing, WSOP HypeWith the addition of legalized online gambling in Nevada came the dream of finding a way to link online and live gambling in a way that would increase revenues like never before. During the most recent World Series of Poker (WSOP) at Rio, online poker broke the $1 million dollar mark for the month of June, Las Vegas Review Journal confirms.

While the main event was a live tournament, online poker revenues were up 40 percent—showing that the live coverage of WSOP and the buzz around the event provided the inspiration to play. Now that it is clear that live events can stimulate a significant boost in online poker, more avenues are being explored to help the two support each other’s growth.

By holding the WSOP as part of both live and online events, online poker and WSOP broke their previous records. All told, over $227 million was paid out to gamblers during the tournaments.

While this spike will clearly not last, it attracted the attention of new online gamblers, which will help all states in hitting the online gambling revenues they seem to be falling short of reaching.
