With nearly 1,000 votes entered as of July 5, a new poll shows that the overwhelming majority of people support the state of Pennsylvania legalizing regulated online gambling. The results are as follows according to Lehigh Valley Live:
- 86.41% Yes to Online Gambling
- 12.51% No to Online Gambling
- 1.08% Not sure/wait and see
One of the primary motivators for legalizing online gambling in Pennsylvania is to help offset the state’s current $1.2 billion deficit. If all 12 of Pennsylvania’s current casinos file for permits and pay the initial taxes the revenue would generate as much as $260 million dollars in fees.
That being said, New Jersey’s slow start with online gambling, combined with Pennsylvania’s proposed tax of 54% (New Jersey’s is just 15%), many wonder how much interest there will be in obtaining a permit. Others continue to oppose any form of legalized online gambling, for fear of the increase risk for gambling addiction.
