Average French Gambler Is Older, Spending Less, and Using MobileThis week, France-based gaming regulator ARJEL published statistics on the gambling market there through the second quarter of 2013.

Decreases in all active accounts were shown, according to a report from CalvinAyre.com,. The average French gambler, however, is trending older with the total number of players aged under 35 dropping by 4% since the second quarter of 2011.

Sports bettors aged 18-24, though, grew 4% to 28%, but in the same age bracket poker players dropped 3% to 18%.  The number of women that currently hold gambling accounts did not change at 13%.

The report also mentions that mobile devices now account for 25% of all online sports wagers, up from 2012.  Mobile horse-racing betting rose 4% to 18%.  The share of mobile poker playing jumped 10% to 28%.  The trend is continuing upward for poker players on tablets as that segment also rose 3% to 7%.

Football accounts for 53% of all sports bets, followed by tennis as the next highest at 28%.  Total betting revenue gained €1m up to €36m.

The average number of active sports betting accounts dropped 2% to 118,000.  ARJEL claims this was due to the absence of casual Euro 2012 this summer.  During Champions League quarterfinal matches, the number of active accounts went as high as 154,000.

The total number of players taking part in tournaments dropped 5%.  Active poker accounts declined 7% to 273,000.  ARJEL attributed the decline to the “downward trend of the market.”
