Ireland Adding New Online Gambling TaxIreland has instituted a new tax to help its bloodstock industry increase revenues by up to €25 million a year ($31.6 million),

According to Pokernews, “The bill, which was sent to the European Commission for review during the summer, is now in a standstill period but may be implemented during the final months of 2014.”

In 2010, Ireland’s Prime Minister Bryan Cowen was in full support of a taxation for online gambling.

“According to Cowen,” the report notes, “tax on online gambling would be an appropriate measure not just because it will increase revenue, but also because it will mean that those currently not contributing to securing the future of important indigenous industries will now make that contribution.”

This tax has been in the works since 2013. Its mandate would roll out a 15 percent tax on the Gross Gaming Revenues (GGR) “of bookmakers and betting exchanges, together with a 1 percent tax on all cash game pots played by Ireland’s online poker players.”

With this new tax, some new changes are right around the corner as well. For instance, it will compel foreign operators to secure a special license to operate inside of Ireland.
