Could Online Gambling Be Key Revenue Enhancer in the Keystone State of PennsylvaniaHow to close a $2 billion budget hole in the Keystone State? One Pennsylvania representative wants to roll the dice on online gambling as a way to make up the shortfall.

Rep. John Payne (R-Dauphin), chair of the House Gaming Oversight Committee, just introduced legislation to regulate online gaming.  Payne believes millions of Americans — including a passel of Pennsylvanians –participate in illegal online gaming where no regulation exists. He told fellow legislators that his bill could curb the illegal market while boosting state revenues.

“Payne said a study released by a Philadelphia-based economic consulting firm named Internet gaming the largest potential new revenue source for Pennsylvania’s gaming industry,” according to ABC27 in Harrisburg, the state capitol. “If enacted, he said the study estimates online gaming would generate approximately $120 million for the state during the first year.”

“I think it’s important we consider all responsible options to boost revenue before we consider asking our taxpayers for more money to fill that deficit,” Payne has said.

The bill Payne supports would also legalize video poker in Pennsylvania bars, restaurants, and taverns; place limits on deposits and losses; prevent minors from playing; and provide resources to help problem gamblers.
