Online U.K. Gambling Tax Prompts Gibraltar To Join EGBAMany of the leading online gambling and betting operators regulated and licensed within the European Union are represented by the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA).

As Online-Casinos.com reported yesterday, the introduction of an online gambling tax in the United Kingdom has driven Gibraltar to join the association.

One of EGBA’s primary objectives is to push for initiatives that are both fair and competitive for the gambling market and in alignment with European Union law.  Some members of the organization are BetClick, bwin.party Digital Entertainment, Expekt.com, and Unibet.

Last week, Gibraltar joined EGBA as its first national member.  The move comes at an opportune time to discuss revisions to the U.K. online gambling tax.  The tax would greatly affect the online gambling industry in Gibraltar, which prompted them to join EGBA to deal with the challenges.

Secretary general of the European Gaming and Betting Association, Maarten Haijer spoke about the newly formed partnership with Gibraltar: “We are very pleased to be working with the GBGA (Gibraltar Betting and Gaming Association). Not only does the GBGA represent a significant portion of the EU’s online gaming offering, but both organizations share the vision of a strictly regulated, cross border industry with high standards and consumer protection as priorities. We are therefore thrilled to welcome the GBGA to the fold.”

Chief executive of the GBGA, Peter Howitt, also commented: “Partnership with the EGBA will allow us to work in tandem with the EGBA to better represent Gibraltar gaming operators in the EU on key issues relating to consumer protection, anti-money laundering and effective regulation within the context of an increasingly competitive environment.”
