Uber Facing Uphill Drive in NevadaNevada — and, in particular, Las Vegas — would be a great market for Uber. But the ride-sharing juggernaut is yet to reach the open highways of Nevada.

According to a new report from the Las Vegas Review Journal, residents across the state want Uber. And they’re even willing to petition for it.

“More than 26,000 people have signed a petition asking [Gov. Brian Sandoval] and Attorney General Adam Laxalt to lead the way toward allowing the company to operate in the state,” the report reads.

As of this writing, however, Nevada transportation laws still dictate that the service is illegal.

Nonetheless, when its illegality is reversed (assuming it happens), there will no shortage of service available. The same report notes that people are lining up to be Uber drivers.

Uber faces a formidable opponent in the state’s limousine and taxicab industry, which says, essentially, “Go ahead and operate, Uber. Just apply for licensing, pay the permit fees, get the inspections, buy the insurance and follow the same rules we follow.”

Uber, however, the report explains, hopes to find itself exempt from these taxing regulations and requirements because it deems itself to be a tech company, not a transportation company.
