Is Internet Gambling Really Gaining Steam in New JerseyNot to anyone’s surprise, Internet gambling is on the rise in New Jersey.

The Garden State launched real-money Internet gambling on November 21st, 2013 and raked in $8.4 million in revenue by the end of December. But this “progress” has been anything but a simple journey.

While it seems as if New Jersey’s first year projections were a bit optimistic, it is clear that Internet gambling is getting a foothold in the state. A small poll conducted in late January 2014 among 690 individuals who gambled in Atlantic City casinos on a semi-regular basis found that 3% had already participated in Internet gambling. An additional 7% plan on gambling online in 2014.

The same poll found that, if given the opportunity, 55% of gamblers would place sports bets on a regular basis. Sports betting is something New Jersey has been petitioning for since 2011. Although federal courts have denied these appeals and petitions, the state has until mid-February 2014 to petition the US Supreme Court if they want to continue their efforts toward legalizing sports betting.
