AGA Praises House Passage of the Innovation Act of 2013Ahead of the weekend, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Innovation Act of 2013 by a commanding bipartisan vote of 325 to 91.

Proponents contend that the bill will curtail the antics of “patent trolls,” individuals and entities that purchase patents and sue entrepreneurs for their “infringement.”

Geoff Freeman, AGA president and CEO, says that he and his organization support the passage of this “important legislation.”

“The gaming industry applauds the U.S. House of Representatives for passing the Innovation Act of 2013 in a bipartisan fashion…” Freeman said in a written statement. “This legislation will help reduce frivolous and abusive patent litigation, asserted by patent trolls, that has negatively impacted U.S. gaming businesses, along with a broad range of other industries.”

“The gaming industry is proud to be an innovative, major American economic driver, supporting more than 1 million U.S. jobs,” Freeman’s statement concludes. “The Innovation Act is an important step toward removing unnecessary hindrances on such innovation, job creation and economic growth. The American Gaming Association (AGA) looks forward to its continued partnership with the Coalition for Patent Fairness as the Senate now considers patent reform in the days ahead.”

The Senate is expected to act on the bill by year’s end.
