WSJ Singapore Reevaluating Online GamblingAccording to a report Wednesday in The Wall Street Journal, the government in Singapore is exploring ways to restrict online gambling.

To do so, authorities in the nation plan to seek public feedback on ways it can regulate online gambling and better cultivate the practice in ways that will increase taxable income stemming from online gambling.

Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs indicates that the aforementioned restrictions would include “blocking of remote gambling websites, blocking of payments to remove gambling operators as well as prohibiting advertisements that promote remote gambling.”

The full list of measures will be determined during a public consultation that will last until Jan. 10, it said. Remote gambling refers to the use of devices, such as mobile phones and computers, to access gambling websites.

“We recognize that online gambling is an inevitable global trend that must be addressed,” said Mr. Lim Hock San, chairman of the government’s National Council on Problem Gambling, or NCPG.
