Albania Halting Online Gambling AbroadThe New Zealand Herald is reporting that the nation of Albania is effectively cutting off access to all forms of Internet betting sites abroad.

The goal of this move, we’re told, is to curtail the enormous outflow of money from one of the most financially disadvantaged nations in Europe.

Prime Minister Edi Rama on Friday said the government would prepare legislation to block gambling on websites based abroad, where Albanians spent 500-700 million euros ($690-965 million) a year, according to calculations from domestic and international experts.

According to the report, no data was shared with regard to the money spent on domestic gambling.

In recent month, authorities have reportedly monitored hundreds of casinos and betting shops, closing and pursuing chargers again many of their owners for operating illegally or committing tax evasion.

Rama has been in power since the June parliamentary election.
